Ursa Major by MoreVespenegas Ursa Major by MoreVespenegas
MLP has some fascinating creatures. The Ursæ I always found to be really cool, beyond just the pun. "Little" pieces of the sky fallen to earth. The style I drew it here is more like a real bear, specifically a grizzly, than what is in the show but that's how I wanted to draw it.

Somehow it reminds of couple of Anime I saw where there's a giant creature roaming about.

It's probably Princess Mononoke. The resemblance was mentioned a few times.

The legend speaks of her having a long tail. That should be kept from the show.

Yeah I used a different body style when drawing it and one of the things cut was the tail. The constellation is famous for having a long tail, if I was to redo this piece I would definitely change that.

You know the consistency I'm appreciating in this image? The partially shown Mare on the Moon.

Also, Daidarabochi!!!

I always put the mare in my MLP moons, even when it technically shouldn't be there after the season 1 premier.
Also Daidarabochi are awesome.

I have added this to my favourites, because Mononoke Hime is one of my favourite anime. Thanks for drawing this. :)

Clearly an Ursa Minor. I can't believe no one has yet pointed that out.

Do you think it's too small? Or the body shape?

To me, this looked much like the Ursa minor from the episode, the way I remember it.

I thought it was too small to be a major. I'm no longer sure about this; perhaps the scale you chose is accurate.

The body shape more closely resembles the minor than the major in my opinion. It looks a lot younger than the major depicted in the show.

Yeah I changed the style from the show as it was a bit too cartoony with the fangs and claws for me. I modeled it after an adult grizzly bear which is what the ursa minor more closely resembles. Yay artistic licence!
In any case it can be a ursa minor if you want it to be.

Mysterious, a bit sad, but still good atmosphere. A feeling of depth too. I really like what you did. :)

It's a lonely near. It has very few friends.
It's hard to find friends when most things can't reach past your ankles.

Yep took inspiration from a scene in Princess Mononoke. I really like the art in Miyazaki's work, especially Mononoke and Nausicaa.

Well, it seems that that is fairly unanimously loud and clear. Everyone is immediately recognizing his style adapted to MLP:FIM from what I'm seeing in the other comments now that I look at them. You've done an amazing job. I've always wanted to see how the characters of the show would look in his beautiful artistic style and this is quite resoundingly the very next best thing ^_^

When I was looking at references for this piece that's the first thing that I thought of.
That and the size of the cave, the thing can probably fit all of canterlot inside.
